Therapy vs. Coaching: What’s the Difference?
At first glance, therapy and coaching can look and feel very similar — both are about creating deep, lasting change. The difference comes down to the framework and the way the work is held.
- Therapy supports healing. It focuses on resolving past experiences, patterns, and symptoms that may be impacting your present. It’s a regulated healthcare service with legal protections.
- Coaching supports growth. It’s future-focused, helping you step into your potential, align with your soul, and create the life you want. Coaching is not therapy, though it can feel equally transformative.
In both, I may use powerful tools such as hypnotherapy, meditation, and guided inner work. Whether we’re focusing on healing or moving forward, our work is always tailored to your journey.
A Note on Ethics & Confidentiality
- Psychotherapy is a licensed, regulated service. It involves the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions and is protected by privileged communication under state law.
- Coaching is not therapy. Coaching is not regulated in the same way, and coaching communications are not legally privileged. I do, however, maintain confidentiality to the highest ethical standard, with the exception of rare circumstances where mandatory reporting laws apply (e.g., risk of harm to self or others).
- In coaching, I may provide professional forms (such as confidentiality agreements) so expectations are clear and trust is upheld.
